Characterization of time-variant and time-invariant assessment of suicidality on Reddit using C-SSRS

Suicide is the 10 th leading cause of death in U.S (1999-2019). However, predicting when someone will attempt suicide has been nearly impossible. In modern world, many individuals suffering from mental illness seek emotional support and advice on well-known easily-accessible social media platforms such as Reddit. While prior artificial intelligence research demonstrated ability to extract valuable information suicidal thoughts behaviors, these efforts have not considered both severity temporality risk. The insights made possible by access data enormous clinical potential—most dramatically envisioned a trigger employ timely targeted interventions (i.e., voluntary involuntary psychiatric hospitalization) save lives. this work, we address knowledge gap developing deep learning algorithms assess risk terms Reddit based Columbia Severity Rating Scale (C-SSRS). particular, two approaches: time-variant time-invariant modeling, for user-level assessment, evaluate their performance against clinician-adjudicated gold standard corpus annotated C-SSRS. Our results suggest that approach outperforms method assessment suicide-related ideations supportive behaviors (AUC:0.78), while model performed better (AUC:0.64). proposed can be integrated with diagnostic interviews improving assessments.
